Letters To The Editor

In reference to the railway article, I have to say that the elite really have no idea what it is like to be forced to travel by train or earn a meagre amount. How can we expect them to improve our situation? 60% of the country is in the clutches of making an earning and spend an entirety for it simply because they are left in a cycle of never-ending struggle. This is only aggravated with the nonchalance towards the railway. At least have the thefts taken care of or the pension process facilitated!

PIA's State of Affairs: From National Flag Carrier to National Liability

Maheen Tariq

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) was created out of the private airline Orient Airways in 1955, eight years after Pakistan became an independent nation. The carrier performed well until the 1970s, when corruption and overstaffing negatively impacted the company. In the 1980s, the carrier’s reputation was further hit due to poor maintenance practices. 1990 signalled further challenges for PIA with the liberalisation of market. Despite remaining the largest operator on Pakistan's international and domestic routes, the carrier is increasingly losing its share in the global market. Due to the management's constant negligence and massive corruption executed under the banner of aircraft replacement, inefficiencies have penetrated deeply into the entire system of the corporation.

The Economic Front: A Modern Sense of Warfare

Hasnain Akhtar

Over the past century, especially after the industrial revolution, nations of the world have changed their perspective greatly on their relations with other states. The days of gibberish military aggression are long gone, unless monetary gain of a particular group is prioritised. The foreign policies of the world's superpowers have considerably evolved from the lurid one-upmanship of the cold war to a greater spending of men and resources for an economic surge. In the scenario of our somewhat immediate history, a greater emphasis was laid by governments on military industrial complexes and assembly lines for military hardware to assert their superpower status in the region. The collapse of the Soviet Union put question marks to this notion and these policies were labelled by analysts as arbitrary actions of dictatorial governments and their think tanks. Even the United States, regarded by many as

3G In Pakistan

Ali Amjad

The competition amongst Cellular Mobile Telecom Operators (CMTOs) has resulted in drastic diminution of rates, bringing mobile phones within the purchasing power of the masses, thus allowing them to possess this new facility. Similarly, competition amongst the manufacturers of mobile phones has also lowered their cost. As a result, a major increase in demand for mobile phones has been witnessed. On top of it all, various attractive packages offered by CMTOs directly implies that a majority of the population obtains connections from multiple mobile operators. The credit of this largely goes to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) which has worked hard to formulate and implement realistic policies and regulations.

Has the US Fiscal Cliff Really Been Averted?

US FiscalTuesday saw the Republican-controlled House of Representatives agree to a deal to stave off the effects of the so-called fiscal cliff, though not until after the deadline. Many are hailing the bill as a great success, but critics are not convinced.

Pakistan's Nuclear Capacity: A Closer Look

Summayah Malik

The nuclear capacity of a country portrays its potential to pose deterrence. Countries try to acquire nuclear power in terms of managing power balance relative to their potential and possible threats which are defined in the official declared nuclear doctrine of that country. The nuclear acquisition in South Asia by the neighbouring enemies poses a danger due to the earlier history of wars. The historical ground the rivalling neighbours have has evidently been creating an “image” for the official acknowledgment of acquiring nuclear capacity. In the case of Pakistan, the fear of being an unsecure country since her inception has played a very crucial role for the country’s nuclear quest in relevance to Indian nuclear quest.
